History

Wemtech (which originally stood for West Midlands Regional Technology Centre) was one of a number of regional technology centres that were established in 1989 under a national initiative by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI, now BIS). The regional technology centre was established as not-for-profit organisation consisting of network of over 300 experts and consultants providing help and advice to Small & Medium sized Enterprises (SME's), predominantly manufacturers, to enable them to make better use of technology and improve their business methods. In 1993, the DTI disbanded the technology centres in favour of the well known Business Link and subsequent Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) organisations. Wemtech, being the only centre to remain active, re-established itself as the managers of ‘The West Midlands EMC Club,’ one of several regional EMC clubs that were developed and supported by the DTI to assist manufacturers to prepare themselves for the soon to come into force EMC Directive, in accordance with the new requirements for CE marking that was introduced in the mid-1990s.

Over the next decade, the West Midlands EMC Club continued to grow as several of the other clubs declined, becoming the Midlands EMC Club, and then the Midlands EMC & CE Club which provided help and advice regarding several other CE marking Directives in addition to EMC. Wemtech continued to manage the club activity and operate a brokerage model employing a number of consultants offering various product compliance related services. In 2003 Wemtech, still a not-for-profit company, made a move away from being a network of consultants and, as well as managing the club, it began to provide consultancy services and training employing in-house expertise. In the same year Wemtech purchased Consultancy and Technical Services, and a new company Wemtech CTS was registered. Wemtech CTS operates commercially, providing various technical testing and assessment services required to assist companies in meeting their CE marking obligations. In addition, the Midlands EMC and CE club became The CE Marking Association, a national club providing help and advice relating to all CE marking Directives and other product compliance related regulations.

The Wemtech group (Wemtech, Wemtech CTS and the CE Marking Association) continues to grow and demonstrates success in the CE marking and product compliance field, providing an extensive range of services under the banner of the CE Marking Association.
